We Move Our Bodies All The Time

We move our bodies all the time but often, our bodies are moving while our minds are somewhere else. For someone who is not active or moderately active, it’s difficult to make a shift to high levels of activity on a regular basis. Now add pain or another chronic health condition on top of the inexperience, and it is nearly impossible. That’s why I believe in meeting your body wherei it is.

First, become conscious of how you move - and how you don’t. What gives you difficulty? What can you do with ease? Bringing the mind and the body together to move on purpose - with purpose is the first step to regaining range of motion that extends beyond everyday living.

Second, do your everyday chores with purpose and mindfulness. We wash the dishes daily, wash our cars monthly and take the elevator in tall buildings. The second step is to begin to do these activities merging the body and the mind - being ever present. As you feel ready, make a reach to put away dishes into a stretch; make a lean over to wash your white walls into a squat and make that long wait for an elevator into a gradual stair climb.

Third, look for an exercise technique that fits your needs and fits your body’s condition. Don’t train for a marathon with bad knees. Don’t join 103 degree yoga when you have a heart condition or an aversion to heat.

Yoga and Qigong are gentle, yet effective ways to coax your body back into balance. This type of exercise is good for anyone and can be modified for those with special medical needs.
